Kilimanjaro Marathons
For those who are looking for something a little out of the ordinary, a little unusual, and very challenging, try participating in a Kilimanjaro Marathon!
There are several chances of getting involved in a Kilimanjaro Marathon every year, and you can choose between a standard Kilimanjaro Marathon, a Triathlon on and around Mount Kilimanjaro, or another similar event. Details of some of the most popular events are provided below.
Kilimanjaro Marathon
The Kilimanjaro Marathon begins and ends in Moshi and is 42.2km long. This year the Kilimanjaro Marathon was held on 2nd March 2008, and the event has the offical backing of the Tanzania Amateur Athletics Association (TAAA), the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB), and the International Association of Athletics federation (IAAF). The route takes runners through a diverse range of habitats and villages and naturally is mainly based on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. Should you prefer less of a physical challenge, there is the option of a half marathon, which like the main run starts and finishes in the stadium in Moshi town. Prizes are awarded for those finishing in the first ten. The short 5km Fun Run provides an entertaining way to participate for those those less energetic or physically fit individuals!
Mt Kilimanjaro Marathon
The Mt Kilimanjaro Marathon is being held on 22nd June 2008. The Mt Kilimanjaro Marathon is in actuality a triathlon, which involves for the first time for this event a cycle race, a standard marathon and a Kilimanjaro climb. The cycle ride begins two days prior to the Kilimanjaro climb and is 50km long. To climb Mt Kilimanjaro participants usually take 5 days, and then have one day of well deserved rest before taking on the final stage of the event - the Mt Kilimanjaro Marathon, run on the last Sunday in June every year. The route consists of a 10.5km loop repeated five times by participants, set on the base of Kilimanjaro and the town of Moshi.
