The Udzungwa Mountains in Iringa Region have a large variety of forest habitats ranging from Lowland Forest to Montane forest. The Udzungwas provide a range of fantastic hiking opportunities, from one day treks to the stunning Sanje Falls or the nearby Prince Bernards Falls to 3 and 6 day treks to Mwanihana and Luhomero Peaks.
As with the majority of the Eastern Arc Mountains, there are excellent birding opportunities. There is also a high probability of seeing endemic primates, including the Sanje Crested Mangeby and the Udzungwa Red Colobus, recently renamed for its place of origin. The Udzungwa Mountains present one of the world's most unique ecological niches; known as the Galapagos of Africa, the levels of endemism here are incredible, and new species of amphibians and even mammals are still being discovered today. Hiking through the Udzungwas truly is a chance to observe flora and fauna which can be seen nowhere else in the world, and due to the low visitor numbers you are likely to be witnessing these amazing natural wonders far from the crowds of the bigger parks.
Hiking in the Udzungwa Mountains is a real alternative to climbing Kilimanjaro if you are interested in the forest zone. These mountains are not busy in terms of tourist numbers so you will be truly alone in the heart of the bush. There are no lodges in the park so you have to be prepared to camp in order to experience this - the campsites in the Udzungwas are basic but well situated and spending a night or two under canvas in the middle of the rain forest will make an unforgettable part of your trip.
