The trek from Machame is popular among those looking to escape the main tourist trails, although considered physically challenging - it is recommended that people looking to climb Kilimanjaro along the Machame route are fit and healthy. Due to the poor quality of the huts along the route camping in tents is recommended all the way.

Moshi is a small busy town, dwarfed by the towering slopes of Kilimanjaro rising proudly above its roofs. Moshi is smaller than neighbouring Arusha, and less-visited apart from those climbing Kilimanjaro - as a result the atmoshpere is more relaxed and far less touristy than other towns. Moshi has a busy market which is fascinating to wander round, and there are several options for eating and drinking, as well as a rang eof choices for accommodation.
