Swahili Coast

The Swahili Coast runs down the Eastern coast of Tanzania and is a fascinating mix of white sandy beaches, bustling towns, old Arab ruins, lush forest and open bush. With the combination of the local African tribal culture, the Arabic influence, and the remains of the German and British colonial times, the Swahili Coast offers the visitor a range of landscapes, activities and cultural experiences.

Bagamoyo is steeped in history, as it was the original main port for the region, used until the harbour silted up and the Germans moved their base of operations to what is now Dar es salaam. The name Bagamoyo itself has many meanings, among which is 'Lay down your heart' thought to originate from the days when the slave caravans stopped here to load their human cargo aboard ship - this was the last many slaves saw of their homeland. These days, Bagamoyo has several popular beach resorts, and is only 70km north of Dar es Salaam on a good tarmac road. There is a range of accommodation available here, mostly along the beach looking out over the clear blue water of the Indian Ocean.

Dar es Salaam, which translates as Haven of Peace, is a city of about 3.5 million people on the coast of Tanzania, and is a great place to begin and end your Tanzania safari. From Dar es Salaam it is easy to get to the romantic island of Zanzibar by ferry or plane. Dar es Salaam's Julius Nyerere International Airport has flights direct to most major international destinations and many internal connections. Dar is the heart of Tanzania in mnay ways, even though Dodoma is the official capital. The home of Swahili culture, an exotic mix of Bantu and Arab influence, Dar es Salaam has a busy cosmopolitan atmosphere in places, especially in the ever-growing down town business centre.

Saadani National Park is a relatively new national park located on the beach. Whilst it has big game this is difficult to see.
