Usambara Mountains

The Usambara Mountains are located in North-East Tanzania. The Usambaras are approximately 70 miles (110 km) long and range from 20 to 40 miles in width. The highest mountain in the range is Nilo at 2,440m. The Usambaras are commonly split into two ranges, West Usambara and East Usambara. The East Usambara is closer to the coast, receives more rainfall, and is significantly smaller than the west. The mountains are accessible from the towns of Lushoto in the west, and Amani in the east.

The Usambaras are superb for hiking and birdwatching. They have numerous endemic birds including the Naduk Eagle Owl, Usambara Alethe, and the Usambara Weaver. Amani Nature Reserve used to be a retreat for German colonial Officials and has a rich history. It is also superb for bird watching.

Hiking in these mountains can be as demanding or relaxing as you wish. From steep ascents through cloud forest to gentle strolls to the sites of African Violets St Paulia species.

We said goodbye to our fantastic crew at breakfast, with Kili standing majestically in the background blanketed again in a fresh layer of snow. The final hike down on Day 6 was not too bad. We had a celebratory Kilimanjaro Beer at the lunch stop, and we all felt quite energised. I ran the last 9km. Well maybe that's a bit of an exageration!
