Machame Route

This is a popular route with steep paths through superb forests to a ridge that leads through moorland to the Shira Plateau.

It trail subsequently traverses beneath the glaciated south face of Kibo. Here there are magnificent views of the Southern Icefields. An extra acclimatization day is often added to the itinerary. This is spent either on the Shira Plateau with a walk to the Shira Needles, or camping in the Karanga Valley.

The final push for the summit starts very early in the morning from Barafu Hut. Mweka Route is used for the descent.

You will sleep in tents on the mountain. Walking poles are useful when crossing the scree to the summit.
